This orange wine is neither an ordinary one, nor whatever image you have of what an orange wine should be. This is a 100% Malvazija from Istria, harvested in 2018 in Goriska Brda, Slovenia (neighbouring the Italian Collio region, on the other side of the border), and produced by the vigneron Aleks Klinec.

It’s a natural, biodynamic, unfiltered, non-clarified wine, with the must macerating on the skins for some four days, then fermenting with autochtonous yeast, then maturing in acacia oak vessels for three years. It’s a whole manual production, from the vine to the bottle.

Here you’ll find nuts, dried plums, raisins, medicinal aromas, wax, blossom, orange peel and lemon zest. It’s mineral, and has noticeable but elegant tannins.

Tasted in 2024.
